‘Heathers’ Brings Dark Humour and Big fun to the Kings Theatre, portsmouth
As part of its UK tour, ‘Heathers’, a musical with a recent cult-following has arrived in Portsmouth. When The Kings Theatre asked if we’d like to attend press night we didn’t even ask ‘What’s your damage?’!
Directed by Andy Fickman, Heathers (if you are not already familiar with the story) is not the average American High School Musical. Based on the original film from 1988, the show explores themes of suicide, murder and sexual violence yet keeping a strong comedic storyline throughout whilst leaving the audience with a ‘feel-good’ attitude after leaving the theatre.
The show is phenomenal from start to finish and contains a beautifully written soundtrack with modern classics such as ‘Dead Girl Walking’, ‘Candy Store’ and ‘Seventeen’ - it really is a banger of a show that captures the entire audience from 9 to 99!
Jenna Innes stars as ‘Veronica Sawyer’ and is truly fantastic, Jenna’s vocals are fabulous particularly in ‘I say no’ - the song felt so much more alive! Keelen Mcauley as ‘J.D’ is equally as talented capturing the quirks and unusual mannerisms of the character perfectly whilst still putting his on spin on the beloved role.
Esme Bowdler is the perfect ‘Heather Chandler’ - from an audience perspective it feels like she is Heather Chandler and not just playing her! Her singing ability is truly incredible.
Sedona Sky (Heather Duke) & Daisy Twells (Heather McNamara) are just as amazing with their dance & vocals through the entirety of the show. Another particular highlight was Amy Miles as ‘Martha Dunnstock’ who sang ‘Kindergarten Boyfriend’ so beautifully that left us near to crying, which is a very interesting thing about this show, it has aspects that make you laugh out loud as well as parts that make you want to cry. It is a very well written story.
We could go on and on about the cast, all of them are beyond talented and make the show truly ‘Beautiful’!
